Coast Guard Cutter Biscayne Bay (WTGB 104) breaks ice in the Straits of Mackinaw on the Great Lakes. The Biscayne Bay is stationed in St. Ignace.

Still snowing....This is the view from my porch looking across the yard toward the driveway. I have to admit that it is beautiful to look outside right now...my house is surrounded by woods so I have a view of snow covered trees from every window.

This is what I saw when I opened my door this morning 12/29 (the camera date is a day ahead). I was sick and came home early from work and went straight to bed on Friday(28th). That was at noon and there was no snow...I could see patches of grass still. When I woke up it was dark outside and I didn't realize it had been snowing until I went to put some garbage out. At that point it had snowed maybe a few inches...and I thought that was bad enough. Then when I looked out today it had snowed about a foot or more. I could hardly get my door open...what fun! Gotta love winter!!!

Ferry Boat's in Dry Dock

One of our fellow blogger's asked me where they put the ferry boats once the ice starts forming on the Great Lake's. They take them out of the water and put them in dry dock.

Mackinac Island

This is Mackinac Island, it's a 15 minute ferry boat ride from St. Ignace. This island is a step back in time. The island has no motorized vehicles except for emergency vehicles. The main transportation there is horse, horse and buggy and bikes, and walking of course. The movie Somewhere in Time, staring Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve was filmed on the island.

One of the ferry boats that take passenger's to Mackinac Island. The ferry's are on a limited schedule right now and will soon be done for the season. Once the ice forms the only transportation to Mackinac Island is by snowmobile or plane.

This is the view from the bridge viewing area. This used to be an undeveloped piece of land where the geese hung out, now it is a beautiful park where people can view the bridge and get information and there is even picnic area's to have lunch or dinner on a nice warm day.

Father Marquette Park

This park is located next to the Ojibwa Museum and is the burial site of Father Jacques Marquette. In 1671, Jacques Marquette, a French Jesuit, founded the mission of St. Ignace, named for the founder of the Jesuits, Ignatius Loyola.

Theme Day: Bridges

This is the Mackinac Bridge, it links the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to the Lower Peninsula. The Mackinac Bridge is just a skip and a jump from my house, as a matter of fact, if my house had a third story I would be able to see the bridge from there.

The Mackinac Bridge is currently the third longest suspension bridge in the world. The bridge construction started May 7, 1954. The bridge opened to traffic on November 1, 1957. The Mackinac Bridge is 5 miles long and the height of the main towers above water is 552 feet, also the height of the roadway above water at midspan is 199 feet. The bridge as of this month has been open to traffic for 50 years and there was a celebration held in July with parades and lots of beautiful fireworks among other fun events. One must see the bridge in person to totally appreciate it's beauty.
